    For most individuals, turmeric (Curcuma longa) is just a spice in the cabinet, used to add heat and that distinctive yellow color to a variety of dishes. But the history of this unique spice tells a different tale and is why it is considered one of the superfoods everyone should be using today.

    Turmeric is a flowering plant of the ginger family, producing branched, yellow to orange, cylindrical and aromatic rhizomes (underground plant stems). The precise origin of turmeric is not known, with research showing it may have originated in tropical Southeast Asia. Today, the spice is most associated with India, where it is used in many dishes and in their medicines.

    Turmeric has been part of traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda and Siddha for thousands of years and is known for its powerful anti-inflammatory effects along with being a strong antioxidant. It is one of the most well-known, widely researched, and commonly used Ayurvedic spices in the world.
